Marathon Runner Mark Bergin
Mark is a graphic designer from West London, age 33

I first got the Marathon bug in 2003, and since then I’ve completed it three times. It’s a great event to get involved with.

I chose to run for Elizabeth Finn Care as the charity’s work really struck a chord with me. You never know what’s around the corner and how you’d react to it. The fact that there’s an organisation there to help people out when they get into difficult situations is great.

Training for the Marathon is an excellent way to keep fit. When you’re sitting at a desk all day, it’s great to be able to run home and let off some steam. I’m running about 16 miles at the moment, training about 5 times a week, and aiming for a time of three and half hours. Usually I’m training on my own. My friends say it’s because they won’t be able to keep up, but I know they’re daunted by the distance!

It can be tough to fit training in around a busy work schedule, but it’s worth it. The atmosphere on the day of the Marathon is electric. Mum and Dad will be there to support me on the day – they can’t really say no, can they!

In my opinion, raising money by taking part in the Marathon is one of the best ways to give to charity. People really get behind you.
