We all want to leave something behind for our loved ones, but more than half of people in Britain do not have a Will. Making a Will is the only way you can make sure your assets are divided according to your wishes. If not, some of your money may revert to the Treasury or be taken up in administrative fees.

It is a common misconception that making a Will is a difficult and expensive process but this is not the case. A simple Will drawn up by a solicitor can cost as little as £50. If you already have a Will it is easy to make additions or changes to it. Leaving a gift to a charity can be done with a Codicil form signed in the presence of two witnesses, and it could mean that you pay less inheritance tax.

After you have provided for your loved ones, remembering Elizabeth Finn Care in your Will is very easy to do. You will be making a huge difference to people’s lives in the future, whatever the size of your gift.

Looking to the future

Elizabeth Finn Care is a charity with big plans. Last year we helped 4,000 people with direct financial and emotional support. The Turn2us helpline and website was developed in 2007 and now, just 4 years on, it receives millions of visitors each year. We recently took on management of 38 different charitable funds in Edinburgh, allowing us to help thousands more people from different backgrounds struggling in financial need.

All of these developments have only been possible thanks to the amazing people who have left a gift in their Will to Elizabeth Finn Care. We can only carry on growing and providing help for so many if there are generous people who continue to support us in this way.

What can you do?

By leaving a gift to Elizabeth Finn Care in your Will you are ensuring that we are there when future generations need someone to turn to. After you have taken care of your loved ones you could also be helping a mother caring for her disabled son; a widow struggling to make ends meet or a family whose life has been turned upside down by redundancy.

We understand that your Will is a personal matter and we will never ask you how much you are intending to give. We also understand that updating your Will is something you will do in your own time so we will not write to you constantly to remind you.

Your solicitor will best be able to advise you about how best to reduce your liability to inheritance tax and on the appointment of executors. In order to leave a gift to Elizabeth Finn Care you will need:

Pecuniary: a specified amount of money
Residuary: a proportion of your estate

Pecuniary legacies can be out dated by inflation, for example a gift of £1,000 included in a Will in 2000 is only worth £780 in 2011. Residuary legacies retain their value because they are given as a fraction or a percentage.
