Kate Adie puts the kettle on for those in need
Immediate Release: 18 March 2009

Elizabeth Finn Care - a UK direct grant giving charity - is calling on people across the UK to support the ‘Big Tea Cosy’, a fundraising event designed to highlight and help reduce the isolation and loneliness that poverty brings to a person’s life, during the month of May.

Research shows that before seeking help from Elizabeth Finn Care, 77 percent of beneficiaries couldn’t afford to participate in recreational activities – such as meeting friends out for a cup of tea – isolating them from social support and economic opportunities.

Getting together over a cup of tea has long been seen as the British way to talk through problems. With a cup of tea costing around 3p to make, it is a cheap and cheerful way to spend time with friends and family.

Kate Adie, who has pledged her support for the ‘Big Tea Cosy’, said: “The front line of the recession lies behind closed doors, in ordinary streets up and down the country. The simple act of getting together to raise money over tea and biscuits, we will create a common cause to combat the poverty and isolation hidden in our midst. Please give your support to help Elizabeth Finn Care’s ‘Big Tea Cosy.”

In the current economic climate, with more and more people facing financial hardship, many charities are facing an increase in demand for services as well a drop in income. In the last year, Elizabeth Finn Care has seen a 250 per cent rise in applications for help and this number is expected to increase further this year.

Duncan Watkinson, who has organised the nation’s ‘Big Tea Cosy’ said: “The Big Tea Cosy is a fantastically simple way to catch up with friends and families, whilst raising money for those who need it most.

“Our charity was founded over 100 years ago with a tea party, and we think its still the best way to get people together.”
